Connecting through Affinity
Student affinity groups represent one of many diversity efforts at Nashoba Brooks. Others include the Student Diversity Group, Family Affinity Groups, Parent Diversity Committee, and Parent SEED group.
"We have established student affinity groups in the lower and upper grades. Students are invited to participate in either the lower grades Asian American affinity group or the upper grades Students of Color affinity group. These optional gatherings are casual and often meet during lunch times. Once a month, we offer "bring a friend day," which allows students in the affinity group to bring a guest to their lunch meeting. "Bring a friend day" provides affinity group students the opportunity to share their special experience with their peers and offers a forum for discussion about the purpose and benefits of their group. We believe that affinity groups are extremely important and meaningful for everyone in the community. Participation in these groups is not an activity that segregates students; rather, it provides an opportunity for students who are often in a minority to be with friends who look like themselves, and to make connections."

As participants in the National SEED (“Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity”) Project, Nashoba Brooks parents gather one night each month to engage in conversations about race, class, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability/disability, and cultural issues. Led by faculty facilitators, SEED offers the school’s adult community windows into the experiences of others, and mirrors of their own perspectives.
