LEADERSHIP

A Way of Being


The development of leadership is central to the philosophy of Nashoba Brooks and a strong statement within our mission.  Rather than defining leadership strictly as holding a specific position (such as in school government), we see leadership as an activity, a way of being, and something interwoven into the fabric of each day.  We also see leadership as something that can be encouraged, recognized, and developed in all students, not just in a chosen few.  We want all of our students to be effective collaborators, communicators, facilitators and planners.  We want all of our students to find their voices and to understand that they can effect change with determined effort and skill. 

Leadership for upper grades girls comes into play with the Student Rep system, with service learning activities and initiatives as its chief avenue. In addition to planning and leading a variety of projects, a group of Nashoba Brooks students are participating in a pilot middle school leadership effort titled "Have a Voice, Make a Difference: Change the World Through Citizenship in Action," and they meet regularly with their peers from other schools to train as leaders and to develop service projects.

Student Initiative Gets Results

Dear Mrs. Cowan,

What: A Hula- Hoop Contest

When: The week from Friday October 14 to October 21

Why: All of the money collected will go to the Red Cross to supply aid to
hurricane victims

Who: Lizzie Nelson and the grades 4-8

How:  Each participant pays an entry fee of $1 and receives a sponsor
sheet that they could collect more money for each 15 seconds they
hula-hoop. Then, each grade would meet to compete at recess on certain
days. The three finalists from each grade goes on to the finals the
following Friday. Then the each grade has a week and a half to bring their
money in.

Prizes:  Three prizes were awarded. One for the longest hula-hooper and
two for the most money donated. (The two had a $0.90 differences.)

How much was raised: Between all of the different grades I have raised a
total of $1331.35. Therefore I am requesting a match of $1331.35. This
would lead to a total of $2662.70. The grade with the most participants
and most money was the 4rth grade. Everyone in their class took part and
their grade alone raised over $632.00.
